The "Seefahrt Ist Not' Tagungsabzeichen (day badge) is probably the most recognized tinnie. Considering that it was made to commemorate a single 2-day event it was produced in large numbers (250,000-500,000 estimated), and by quite a large number of makers with often multiple variations of the pin fastenings for each maker. The event was on May 25th and 26th, 1935 in Hamburg, and the main speakers at the event were Josef Goebbels and Rudolf Hess. It was held to celebrate the need for German seafaring or sea power, and there were corresponding celebrations held overseas as well. All of the badges have fairly similar dimensions within a millimeter or so (the widths being between 40.0mm-41.5mm, and the heights being between 44.5mm-46.0mm), but there are large variations in weights. A special badge was also produced by the Fr. Zimmermann firm in 900 silver to be presented to honoured quests. One was offered not too long ago by Helmut Weitze but must have been sold as it is no longer listed. For anyone interested in more details of the event itself and the different manufacturers it would be a good idea to purchase the Fall 2007 edition of the Military Advisor (volume 18, number 4) from R. Bender Publications which contains an excellent article by Wilhelm P.B.R. Saris and Mathieu de Wolf (assisted by Hans-Peter Lopatka).
