    1929 Nurnberg - Good or Bad ?

I have had this for many years and thought it was fake. Within the last two weeks a couple have been posted here that have made me question my 'fake'.

I paid $15 for it at a flea market in the late 1980s. If bad no great loss, if good

    Opinions and comments appreciated

    Thanks for looking

            Nürnberg 1929

I've got a solid type Hoffstätter and a hollow RZM M1/15 (also Hoffstätter) and both have different details than the pictured example. The numbers/letters are different, the swastikas are more defined, the stippled background is more consistent. I can't say that this one is bad, but it's definitely different than my 2 Hoffstätters.

Best $15 you will ever spend - - I agree with Mr Lumsden - - an original example of a very desireable badge.

Very interesting--that means that Hoffstätter had at least 3 sets of dies for this award. The details on the solid example are slightly different than the 2 hollow types. I'll try to post some shots of mine to show the difference if anyone has an interest.

These things fetch around £150 over here. In my view, they're grossly underpriced.

The one shown is the first pre-RZM version. Over 60,000 men attended the rally in 1929, and bought their badges (like this one) as 'day badges' or 'tinnies'. When the badge was made an official NSDAP decoration in 1936, the other solid etc. versions with RZM marks were made as replacements, since many of those men entitled to wear the badge as a decoration would have discarded their original 'tinnies' after a few days.

Although it was not made a decoration until 1936, it is interesting to note that, being designed in 1929, this was the FIRST NAZI DECORATION to be created by Hitler. It predated the Blood Order, the Golden Party Badge and even the Coburg Badge which, although commemorating events in 1922, was not created until 1932. Himmler regarded it as one of his most prestigious awards.

So in the chronology in Nazi awards, it was the VERY FIRST ONE, at the exact opposite end of the scale from the Kurland Cuff Title.

For that reason, it holds a special place in the history of Third Reich Awards.

At current prices, it's a real bargain.

$15 is good but I paid $6 for mine I had no clue what I was picking up. Thanks for the info Robin. I had no history behind this pin.

                          Robin,
That makes perfect sense. I think that this is an original badge as sold at the rally. Do you think the solid, non-RZM type might also be from the rally itself?

                            Erich.

It could well be. The RZM-marked ones are the later issues, but any example of this badge with no marks or with a maker's details could be an early one.

                            Regards,

                            Robin.

I'll attempt to add photos of mine--I'm not sure if I've made them small enought to load here.
