Thanks James! When I bought mine a number of years ago it was described to me as late war. So thats what I've called them ever since.
The painted zinc or "Kriegsmetall" party badge was introduced in 1944 because of war shortages of copper, brass, nickel and silver, not to mention saving the effort of enamel work.
Earlier badges are generally much higher quality, not lower.
