Question about the large top D.A.P. badge- the pin retaining plate has an eliptical shape – I always thought / was told that the retaining plates on these type of badges were always round – is that right or wrong ?

Not elliptical - elliptical (oval) with clipped off ends is bad. True ovals are fine - usually early or HJ related. The ones with the ends of the oval cut off are bad.
