    Anyone from Darmstadt Recognize This?

Anyone know if the monument shown on this Denkmalsweihe tinnie from 1927 is an actual war monument in Darmstadt? The inscription on the monument says "Der hessische Artillerie und ihren Toten."

    Thanks,
    Greg

    Dear Greg,

According to the inscription this must have been a monument in Darmstadt after 1927. Most of these type heroic German monuments were torn down after WW2 either by the victors or the Germans themselves. Highly improbable that this monument still stands. I studied in Darmstadt and have never seen it.

      Dear Frank,

Thanks much! I don't know if this was ever an actual monument, much less still standing. There are quite a few of that type of heroic monument still up in the Oberpfalz area near Grafenwöhr where I lived, so I thought there might be a chance.

      Regards,
      Greg

        Dear Greg,

It was an actual monument at one time, that is for sure, because the text on the tinnie says Denkmalsweihe and gives the day. Weihe is something like an opening to the public.

There still is a monument for the artillery in Darmstadt, but I do not know how it looks like. Next Sunday is Totensonntag in Germany. On this day also the victims of the last wars are commemorated. There will be a ceremony by the Bundeswehr at a second monument in Darmstadt, that of IR 115, which shows a huge, wounded Hessian lion. I will ask a friend from Darstadt, who will participate in this ceremony about the artillery-monument. Last year this ceremony was at the monument of the Artillerie.

The monument for the artillery is still standing in Darmstadt. But is has lost the Handgranatenwerfer after WW II. He was replaced by a wreath. Next to the monument a gable was errected which was moved from the artillery barracks when they were torn down.
