    HJ Gold Honor Badge Opinions

This was purchased at the SOS and because I realize that there is some controversy with these, I wanted some other opinions. Since most of the badges I saw at the SOS were the M1/70, I decided to try and find something that hopefully is less controversial. This one looked okay to me. The serial number is stamped. The RZM and maker's mark appears to be more along the line of engraved rather than stamped . Anyway, I'll let the photos do the talking and see what you guys think.

seems to have wear, and remids me of the holland ss support pins on the numbers and A letter, but the Z with no cross line is strange....I give it a possible...but ive never had one of these , maybe someday. Anybody else know for sure.

Copy. Wrong dot configuration on the obverse and don't like the pin construction nor the marks on the reverse.

I'm still not thinking the same as Ron and other collectors in this field about these M1/52's. Difficult to see on these pictures but if you lay them side by side with accepted makers, like Deumer for instance, the quality is equal. In fact the strange lettering "A" or "B" and the fond of the digits come very close to the way this firm marked their FM membership pins. I have posted some clear pictures a few years ago. Back then the badge was doubtfull just because the M1/52 was double striked. At the moment I still can't proof it's original because I still diden't find examples with a document. But if you see them in your hands it's impossible to see any difference in the quality. We have to wait and see about this type of Golden HJ Honour Badge

              Hj Gold Honor Badge

I appreciate those who did respond, but I guess I am left with a largely unresolved issue. My sentiments, after closely examining the wear and quality of the badge, are that it is a period piece, original, but I don't know if it's worth holding .

Your not the only one, Garry. Have the same badge here. I bought it from a German dealer which I saw every month. It was no problem to give it back. And I often thought of it. But in the end I decided to keep it. Maybe the only reason for it was the quality of the enamel and the IMO real fire gilding and the fact more then one respected German dealer sells them for good. (But that last thing is not of great value )
On the other hand I also do a bit of research after these awards. So I need the doubtfull examples as well for study. If you only want to have one HJ Ehrenzeichen in your collection than I suggest to give it back and look after a Hoffstätter, a Deumer or a Paulmann & Crone. As far as I stand now these are the only ones with solid proof.

                  HJ Gold Honor Badge

Theo, thanks for your candid and informative response. Now I have to make the big decision, although I am fortunate that the dealer I purchased the badge from is a great guy and gave it his lifetime guarantee.

I've been thinking about this badge, and although I have nothing definitive, I thought it would be useful to do a comparison of the RZM number style. I knew I had seen this fairly distinctive style before and found it on the back of my NS-Studentbund mini stickpin, also made by Deschler (M1/52).

As you can see below, they are pretty much an exact match in font and spacing (a little is obscured by the stickpin). The "5" is particularly distinctive, as in the skinny first leg of the "M".

All in all, I'd say it bodes well for this badge (although I still can't explain why there is an "A" along with a number).

Here's a better shot of the "1", which also has a distinctive spikey point to the end of the cap, similar to the HJ badge.

Note also the RZM mark does not have the cross to the "Z", which is perfectly acceptable.

                        Stephen,
I'm learning more about this badge and its peculiariteis with every response. Thanks for the comparison of marks on different pieces. I still get a positive feeling when I look at it.

The obverse is consistent with period originals. I have never seen a 1/52, or a serial number with a letter. Very strange, yet could be right.

Part of the fun is doing the detective work to see if you can shed light on the many mysteries of collecting.

                              Stephen,

I really have to thank you now. I feel we are one little important stap closer.
Yesterday I contacted Raymond about the serial numbers with all that different letters that can be found on the Deschler FM membership pin. According to him only the serial number was written down in the FM membership book. The C's, and D's or other letters are something Deschler production related IMO. And I'm serious convinced that the "A" or "B" on top of the serialnumbers of the Deschler HJ Honour awards are having the same purpose. The lettering has even the same dimensions and font. I only hope we once find an award with his document
