Sometimes you can get good things from bad dealers. It goes without saying you have to know what your buying and be 100% sure at the time of purchase.I recently aquired this very hard hard difficult to find Reichsbahn sleeve eagle, from a dealer whos reputation is in the trash can.IT IS 100% GOOD!I paid less than a third of its fair market value. This is not the first time I have had such luck.

An excellent point to reinforce for new collectors: it is not the DEALER, it is the STUFF. Certainly a Bad Dealer has far more junk, but is possible to pluck pearls from pig slop anywhere, as long as YOU can tell the difference... and presuming there ARE any mixed in among the dreck.

And you guys laugh at me....
.... when I pick through the Manion's catalogues... I have found some real gems from bad dealers. My philosophy has always been the same since I started collecting as a kid. It does not matter who the dealer is, it does not matter what the dealer knows... what matters is what I know. Intense study of every subject I've ever collected has allowed me to make some great finds over the years. I cannot stress this enough to any serious collector, new or advanced:
Study, study, study... buy the books, even the arcane, out-dated ones, the more you learn, the better off you'll be!
