      Ross,

Hitler was indeed partymember nr 555 from the DAP. In fact 55 because they start counting from 500. But after a few years and his release from Prison (Landsberg) he reinstituted the party (now NSDAP) and he saw himself as the one and only number one! No party without him, no future for Germany without him )

      Jambobbyb,

Your right about that Moskou story. I remember, when I was searching on google that I once saw a picture of the Golden Party Badge laying next to a part of Hitlers skull 'lower cheek'. The cheek was removed for inspection and comparising for indification by one of the docters who researched the bodies of Hitler and Eva.

            That might explain it, thanks!

              AH's Party membership card index

It's a duplicate of Hitler's Party membership card index, housed in the former LSSAH Berlin-Lichterfelde (Bundesarchiv), shown on Die Welt: http://www.welt.de/kultur/article991...lied-sein.html

A very nice addition to this thread, Sdesember; thanks for updating it! The file card shown confirms what has been mentioned previously, that Hitler's membership number has been mistakenly quoted as "#7" when in fact it was always "#1" from the moment he refounded the NSDAP on February 27, 1925. The number was written with that particular style of handwriting which begins the character with a long upstroke and makes the final result resemble a 7, at least to American eyes.

                Br. James

Indeed, Br. James, a european 1 looks like a 7. Some write with a serif or a dash added to the 7, sometimes, to avoid a misunderstanding. However, this is not the case with the Füss GPBs, to use them as an example. If one looked at the 1s and the 7s on them, one could mistake them for one or the other as Füss did not add a serif on the 7s, at least from my observation of the 24mm GPBs. The 1s and the 7s on the Deschler ones, however, are easier to distinguish as the 7s have straight profile if it were compared with the 1s which had that european characteristic of a long downward stroke.

Here are some badges that came from Hitler judging by the side notes on the pic.
Not having the pic of the front of the top badge we can only speculate what it is. In any event, my list of possibilities is short..

                        and the lucky number is....1!

And the verso- that should put to rest the question about his digit(s). Better resolution images are available from the source: bpk-images.de
I strongly suggest anyone seriously interested in those (and the subject in general) to go the extra step and check those out for themselves.

                        cheers

                          Copy/paste from Wikipedia -

Adolf Hitler's own Golden Party Badge had the number '1'. He awarded it to Magda Goebbels in late April 1945. The '1' badge was stolen from a display in Russia in 2005. The guards thought that a cat had set off the alarms and this allowed the burglar to escape.

                            Hi Matt,

I wasn't able to find the GPB on the site, but here's a closeup pic of the first one which in my opinion may not be a GPB?

I can't find the collection of his GPB and spoons on that site but will try again later. Here's another screen grab...
