Is this oblong pin plate always wrong? Or just when it appears inside a circular casting, which was designed for a circular pin plate? Thanks, John

Yes I would say so far this type of plate has been proven wrong.
There is an original oval attachment plate that has at times flattened ends it is some times mistaken for the new modern plate. Here is an example.

The Swaztika is bad as well. Not very sharp as in a real HJ badge

Jnoble has already give you a good answer. Be careful with this type of back plate. You can find them on a lot of different enamel badges.
