    Sure it's not..

"Linienschiff", for passenger ship Schleswig-Holstein? Sounds like a KdF tinnie to me. How about a pic?

            OK

I see. Many hurdles to jump...

Well, searching in the dark here...let's see.. Was the Schleswig-Holstein one of the four commissioned KdF liners (W. Gustloff was one also; the most famous, explaining why it sticks in my mind)?

Is there a date on it? You said "pre 1933"; if this is so, I believe that would rule out KdF.

Perhaps I have not translated Linienschiff correctly? Is it Linienschiff? Was there a SMS Schleswig-Holstein, making your badge perhaps an issue in behalf of some sort of support group?

Who said it was a Bavarian state tinnie? The seller?

I don't see anything to match what you describe in my reference books (under Schleswig-Holstein).

If you can find a date, that would help, also any other markings or text; front or back. I'll work on the rest of the questions.

Your $3 outlay might have netted you a nice little piece!

"Linienschiff" is "battleship". The old (1906) Heavy Cruiser "Schleswig Holstein" was considered such a useless lump of iron that the Allies allowed Germany to keep it as one of the main wastes of resources for the Weimar Reichsmarine.

It was used to pump shells at point blank range into a Polish fort at Gdynia in 1939, and served as an effective offshore battery while there was action within naval gun range along the eastern shores of the Baltic in 1941 (and maybe again in 1944?). Bombed and sunk at its moorings in Gdynia by Soviet aircraft 21 March 1945, and laboriously cut up into razor blades between 1950 and 1956... but before Lech Walensa's time at the shipyard there, surely.

The use of the designation "Linienschiff" does indeed suggest Weimar period use, and perhaps there were others for the other ships in the tiny fleet allowed between 1920-33.

Oh, that Schleswig-Holstein. Thanks for clearing that up.

Well, congratulations on getting your first tinne. Will be great when we all can see a picture of it! Tinnies are a great area to collect. I once read that there were over 32,000 issued so just think, only 31,999 to go! Good hunting! Mike
