My thoughts of the reverse were the same as Bob's - looks cast to me. Hard to believe it would suffer such extensive damage and then be carefully preserved by the MoD. The amount of damage is puzzling. Much more than a simple stomping, which if I can say, is not a particularly British reaction to such things. A bit of a head scratcher.
If anything, early badges were nicer because the dies were fresh. Plus, I can't see giving Rosenberg a crummy GPB.
Still, it's in the MoD archives, so you'd think that was some kind of provenance - unless someone did the old switcheroo...
