3 enamel pins with questions...

    3 enamel pins with questions...

    First up is what I think is a Lufthansa pin? I am never sure about these? Two questions I have are:

    1. Is it a Lufthansa pin?
    2. if it is a Lufthansa Pin then what era would it be? Pre-1933 or Third Reich or post-1945 West German or post-1945 East German??

    Next up is a very nice pin with iron cross and the letters VDS on it...I would assume that this is the membership pin for some veteran organisation...but which one? I could not find it...Cheers, Torsten.

      last one for now is a nice Pansy pin ... now, of course it may not be anything to do with the military or germany ... but for some reason, I am almost convinced that I have seen this pin somewhere on a website or in a guide book or ... and of course, now that I have got one I cannot find it again and have no idea what it might be.... hope someone out there knows whatever it might be...Cheers and thanks for any help given...Torsten.

          I do not believe the first one to be a Lufthansa pin, as it just doesn't fit in, from a style standpoint, with any that I've seen to date. I have 9 variations of pre-1945 Lufthansa pins in my collection now, and this one doesn't resemble any of them. There were many pre-1945 German Glider clubs and I would attribute this pin to most likely be from one of those. The second is a WW1 veterans pin (Verein Deutscher ???) and the third I haven't seen before, but would guess to be a civil pin of some type. There were so very many of these high quality German enamel pins that have yet to be attributed to any particular organization. Probably a case of too many jewelers & too much time.

            It's possible that the third pin is Masonic. In the 1930s German Masons started using a blue "Forget-Me-Not" flower as their symbol to replace the square and compasses, and this is similar.

              Hi Lyn, could you show pics of the pre-1945 pins you have for comparison?? Do you also happen to have early East German Deutsche Lufthansa pins to compare...as I think it might also be East German prior to the creation of the Interflug, the East German national airline was also called Deutsche Lufthansa...

              Hi SJL, I thought that flower was a Pansy? Do you think it is a forget-me-not? That could be I guess??...lets see if I can find some references somewhere on German Masonic Insignia...

                I believe the first pin is Wandervogel (sp?). I have seen this design before and it was attributed to this organization (definately pre-WW2)

                  Hi Ron, just check in Huesken and the pre-1945 Wandervogel bir looks different I am afraid...with feathered wings above the body only and two long feathers for a tail (HH number C115)...it is certainly similar, though...but I do not think it is Wandervogel...Cheers, Torsten.

                        Just got the pics through from Lyn and am posting these on his behalf and a beautiful and scarce collection it is .. here is the text of his email to me:

                        I'm not the greatest with a digital camera and mine is not working well at the moment and is about to be replaced with one that takes better close-up shots. The interesting fact about the 2 orange pins is that one was issued in Germany and the other in South America. Apparently Lufthansa gave one to travelers starting from either point and used different makers accordingly. One of mine came from Europe and one from a former traveler in Salvador. The Zeppelin crew member pin is the only one that I have ever seen and is serialized. Hopefully these scans show enough detail to make a reasonable post.
