Very early S A collar tab

This is an example of the rare 1926 pattern S A collar tabs. This piece is typical of some early tabs that were manufactured without buckram backing. In the early days, the term Standarte had yet to be developed. This patch is for the 4th Sturm of the 122nd Gausturme, Wurttemberg. The base color is black with red letters and piping. I have owned this early tab for a number of years. I presently have it listed in E- Stand with some of my last S A collar tabs.

      Mr. Coleman:

When did they start using buckram backing on collar tabs?

Buckram backing for insignia predates the 3rd Reich era. During the years leading up to the Nazis ascent to power, there was no agency that controled the manufacturing standards of uniform items or equipment. Insignia, such as this collar tab, were locally produced, often with economy in mind. Early tabs can be found without backing, as in the case of this tab, or various other material including buckram were used for backing. i hope this answers your question.
