This is only the third black class badge that I've seen good pictures of and they are all (including my own) M1/36 with the pin plate recessed into the badge.

I have always wondered why these badges were made differently to the bronze and silver classes. Just out of interest, does anyone have a black badge from a different maker with a non-recessed pin plate?

Hi Xen,

I'm not 100% shure but I think that those black ones were made from aluminium and the other two classes from a copper alloy. They were blackened and the raised letters were left in their natural aluminium color. And I think that there is a good change that this metal needed a different method for applying the pin?
