repair the enamel or leave it alone?

Do you think it worthwhile to have the enamel on this walking stick badge from the 1936 olympic games repaired or is it best left alone??? Cheers, Torsten.

my vote goes for leaving it as it is, as I do prefer for things to stay in the original state...even if damaged...

I also think you should leave it as it is, the way it does look now gives the piece character.

I think that it could be re-enamelled quite nicely, but of course all of the remaining enamel would have to be removed and then at least I would know for it not to be original...so, I think I will leave it the way it is for the time being...Cheers, Torsten.

Leave it to me to be the troublemaker - I'd fix it. Little chips I don't mind, but it's too far gone as is. You can hardly do any harm at this point.

i agree with Stephen...the value is blown anyways...all thats left is the aesthetic value...now if it was that golden party pin in the other thread...that is a different story

mmhh...so maybe I should revise my opinion? I actually do have a guy to hand who can do re-enamelling and enamel repairs...but I have never used him...so, maybe I could use this little item as a test piece?? Cheers, Torsten.

                      Hi Torstenbel,

I wanted to do a quick poll and leave a fast message, but you've put me in the thinking-corner for over half an hour by now.
So I do understand why you started this poll anyway...

For what it is worth I came to a conclusion: I think you can have it repaired without doing harm to history or value.
Think of all those BBC auction programs: every painting that's worth a few pound is send to a restorer where it is being cleaned and all the damaged parts are touched up.
Same for much other kinds of antique.
I don't think you are commiting crimes against antique laws.

So as for me: focus on finding someone who doesn't ruin it!

                      Best regards,
                      Martin

Torsten , keep us posted if you do go for repair , that would make an interesting thread in its self , for what its worth i would have it repaired its to far gone to fall into "character" imo

Sadly, I no longer have the item that started the thread, but I probably should have it repaired I guess... Cheers, Torsten.

i think you can go either way with this...i dont think the value of the piece warrants the cost for a value play but if you like the look and want for display i think your fine...to repair that will cost how much?...my thoughts is at least 40-50.00 worth of effort.... close??..or am i entirely off base?
