    Mothercross : any opinions?

    Hi everybody,

Please find below a reverse shot of a 2 pattern mothercross in gold. Personally I think this one could be a copy. When you look at the dot on the letter "i" in Hitlers signature you can see that it is completly separated from the letter itself. A feature that I have never seen before on these crosses.

    Any opinions?

    Kind Regards
    Philippe

Philippe, I for one agree with you on this also looking at the f in Adolf you will notice the cross bar missing.

        That is odd!

I agree with the others that doesn't look right at all, very suspect. Can you post a pic of the front a little smaller if possible ( I have a slow download ). I always find that the blue enamel is a good indicator. If its translucent and you can see the pattern of the metal behind then its a good sign. But if its opaque then its a dud. The enamelling is usually the hardest thing to fake and the most expensive aswell..

          Hi guys

Below please find the picture of the front. I didn't post it immediatly because if translucency is a good feature for these typ of crosses than this one is most certainly ok. Because I made the picture a little smaller it's not so visible as on the large format but this mothercross is very translucent. So does this help us any further in finding good features to distinguish between good and fake?

          cheers

Philippe, It maybe the light soruce but your cross appears to be silver not gold but even with nice enamel work I still think it's a repro judging from the reverse but that's just my opinion.

              Hi Guys,

Sorry for the late reply, This WE I set at home without an internet connection and couldn't login earlier. James the cross istn't mine I just posted it as a matter of information to all the members. I also think that it is a fake but just wanted to show that you can't rely only on the quality of the enamel. Personally I think that quit a lot of these crosses are fake. Did you ever wonder for example why the golden mother crosses are so common and cheap. I for myself think that, even taken in to account that Germany at that time was quite a big country, mothers with more then 8 children weren't that common. But that's just my personal opinion. In fact does there excist any information on how many of these crosses were awarded?

              Kind regards
              Philippe

                Philippe,

Thanks for showing us this cross, I agree with what you are saying. I have never seen a faked mothercross like this before, and to be honest I am shocked, the enamelling is very convincing. It seems odd for a reproduction of this standar to be let down by the dodgy signature. I was meaning to ask does the ribbon glow under UV light?
