As many of you know I primarily collect NSDAP Party Membership Badges, but I am also interested in enamel badges from NSDAP organizations.
Despite my knowledge of the badges, I remain utterly perplexed about how they were acquired. For example, if you became a party member, how exactly did you get a party membership badge? Did they give you the badge or did you have to purchase it? If you became a member of one of the NSDAP organizations (e.g. Hitler Youth, Frauenschaft etc.) how did you get your badges? Could you, once a member, purchase them from the local organizational office or were you provided with whatever they deemed fit to provide you?
The Assmann catalog has raised many questions in my mind regarding this issue. The picture catalog was accompanied by a separate price sheet issue in any given year and the catalog I have is devoid of any price sheet listings for items you could only acquire if you had obtained legitimate membership in a specific organization. In other words, I suspect you could only buy enamel badges if you were a member of the organization of which you purchased the badge. This leads me to believe that, if you were an NSDAP member, you were permitted to buy a badge from the local political office, if you had become a Frauenschaft member, then you could buy a badge from that office....etc. But this begs the question. Even if you were a member of an NSDAP organization, were you permitted to buy badges, or were they simply provided to you?
If anyone could shed some light on how party badges were acquired it would be greatly appreciated.
