    HJ/Japan 1942

Guys, Might as well stay on topic with this badge. Some say reproduction as Cone states that only 250 were produced each year. I have only seen a few 1942s and one 1941. Any and all opinions are appreciated. The pin attachment and maker mark seems period although again, Cone's example shows no maker mark and a different pin attachment on his 1944 example. Thank you all for looking and have a nice weekend. Robert

I'm not totally sure what I think about these, I probably tend to err on the side of fantasy pieces, but I wouldn't claim it out & out wrong. They are very nice badges. I think as with several other badges it comes down to personal judgement when you have it in your hand.

I do have a copy of a period picture showing a HJ boy wearing a German/Japan friendship badge & it looks nothing like these or the triangle shape one we see. However, we know that the HJ & Japanese youth visited each other a number of times, so different designs were probably made.

As the photograph is not mine I am unable to post it on forum & I would be reluctant to even if it was, as I imagine we'd soon see a flux of them on the market.

      Cheers
      Don

Don, THank you for your reply. I alternate between good and bad on this piece depending on what day it is. I was hoping to hear from Mike or John C. too as I am curious what their views are. Robert

i have to agree that i am not 100% on these...sometimes i like them and other times dont....these should be very rare...and any other date than 1942 is....however i am of the mindset that they could be good and that for some reason more were produced of the 1942 version than the other years...perhaps to be given out or sold to the masses to commemorate the event and to provide more of a common tie with the German Allies...( you must remember that in 1942 the biggest victories were not being won by the Germans but by the Japanese and the Third reich leadership were pimping their Asian aryan allies as the best thing since sliced bread to their population)...just a thought,....regardless i would not hold the 1942 dated pins as something rare or even remotely in the same value camp as other dates....

            Hi,

I believe the badge to be a fantasy piece. I have not ever seen this type in wear nor have I ever felt the quality to be adequate for this type of award. This is just my opinion.

John, Mike, and Don I too feel this fantasy. I have only seen one other piece of a diferent year and it was flat and not concave as well as having no maker mark and a diferent pin attachment setup. Combined with the fact that 1942s are around alot and noother years and when you look at the lettering on this one comared to Cone's example you will see a huge diference in space between Tagung and Tirol. Into the cigar box it goes. Thanks again. Have a nice weekend. Robert

Tomas, Your English is just fine. Perhaps you could look in Angola and tell me if there is any distance between the G in Tagung and the T in Tirol. Also, is it a 1942? Unfortunately, I do not have access to this publication. Thanks for your investigation. Robert

The correct German way to write this with the abbreviations used would be:

                      4. DEUTSCH-JAPAN. AKAD. TAGUNG

on the badge it is written like this:

                      4.DEUTSCH JAPAN.AKAD TAGUNG

The important things are the missing hyphen between DEUTSCH and JAPAN., which is absolutely necessary. Also the full stop after AKAD., short for AKADEMISCHE is absolutely necessary.
                      Cheers, Frank

Thanks for clearing this up, I think this is the final nail in this badges coffin . When German isn't our first language, these Grammatical errors go unseen.

                          Cheers

Guys, Thanks for all the comments. So I guess I should assume that both Angolia and Cone are in error with regard to this badge? Tomas when you have time, please post image out of Angolia if you can. Thanks alot Robert
