    Permit to fly??? Newbie alert

Hi. I'm BRAND new to this forum and to the hobby. I'm familiar with collecting as I used to be into old lanterns. Unfortunately, space became a problem and so now I've changed directions. Anyway, I understand how a field can be flooded with fakes and frauds and so I'm seeking some help.

I'm currently bidding on what seems to be a very interesting item ... a German permit to fly out of the Stalingrad pocket (eBay item 6576082906). I'm also looking at an old German dog tag (eBay item 6576530403). Now the story this guy tells is compelling and lends some legitimacy to the items but I wonder if I'm too easily decieved. Can someone help me?

Don't worry - I won't be on here all the time asking for help. I'm getting some books so I won't be a pest to other, more proficient collectors. If you have any good reference ideas, they would be appreciated as well.

    Thanks SO much,

    David

I remember reading about these discs on the forum some time ago and if I remember correctly there is no evidence to show that such a thing existed.

I just did a search and came up with this

I concur - likely a fake if they existed at all. They have been appearing on eBay for some time, usually with a good story attached.

I'd stay away. Although common enough items, dog tags have been heavily faked.

No worry about asking questions - that's what the forum is here for.

les, well thats the fact with a lot of things such as the ultra expensive Mein Kampf wooden SS presentation casket . People say they are real but in my opinion I have yet to see evidence of that ,maybe these permits are similar ?

            Hello David,
Welcome to the forum. Being new to this hobby, I will pass on a few nuggets. First, E-bay is a minefield full of crap! There are authentic items to be had, but you must do your homework. This is a great place to learn. The members of this forum are always glad to help. I first saw these permits on E-bay about 18 months ago. I have seen loads since then. Where were they hiding all these years? Makes me wonder Be careful and ask alot of questions. seek out reputable dealers. Be patient, just what you are looking for will eventually turn up. Better to miss a possible deal than to get stuck with Crap! There are a lot of fakes and fantasy items coming out of Eastern Europe right now! I would say on these fantasy "permits"

              David,
There also is a good rule in this hobby: "don't believe the story, believe the item" or "don't buy the story, buy the item".
              Good luck,
              Paul G

Remember, when you send money to East Europe/Russia and you are not satisfied, too bad for you.

                  Thank you all!

Thank you all SO much for your kind help in this matter. As intriguing as these items are (or would be), I should resign myself to the fact that they probably did not, in fact, exist. After all, if they did, surely some would show up as having been successfully employed

Thanks again - esp. Paul for your kind and thoughtful response.

                  David
