DRL War Wounded - Why?

Hi all,

I've been searching high and low for some information on both the DRL / SA War Wounded Badges. Both on the WAF forums and on the internet ... not much out there.

They were instituted in the mid 40's (DRL 1942) (SA 1943). I have a couple of questions:

1. Why were they instituted?
2. Did they replace the regular DRL / SA badges? Or were they awarded alongside the old style DRL / SA badges.
3. Did the older style DRL / SA badges cease production when these War Wounded types entered the picture?

The DRA/DRL badges were to reward with a visible token the athletic accomplishments of an individual. This was a means to an end of promoting and encouraging physical fitness with the general population.
The badge in question was instituted for those soldiers who were disabled as a result of their wounds, and it had a diminished set of required accomplishments set according to their degree of disablity.
It did not replace or supercede the previous bronze, silver and gold grades.

Greg. Thanks for the info. That makes sense, especially the "diminished" set of required accomplishments.

I would imagine the SA for War Wounded would be along similar lines.
