I have had several of those, but no idea how many there are in total...I think there is a German catalogue type reference book for WHW items...but I have not got it...does anyone know of it and/or its title? Cheers, Torsten. www.torsten-german-militaria.com

WHW Tinnie - or is it??

How's this for an unusual tinnie badge? I bought this from a dealer in the US who thought it was an Edelweiss tinnie (like a sweetheart brooch of some kind). I sent the photo to a collector in the Netherlands. He told me he had an identical badge and had been told it was a U-boat sweetheart lapel!! I then sent the photo to a collector in Germany who said straight away that it is not an edelweiss, but a rose, and it was given out on street corners to anyone who donated a small amount of money to the Winterhilfswerk. He tells me they are very common in Germany. I would be interested to hear the views of anyone else on this forum. I personally believe that my German contact is correct about this tinnie. Were they from a particular region of Germany? If they are so common then why don't we see them more often?

Firstly welcome to the forum Ian,
In answer to your question yes your German contact is correct about this WHW item it is one of a few pieces that were made of iron. The reason they are common in Germany in my opinion is like many WHW items one wouldn't easily associate them with the Third Reich and that also maybe the reason you don't find them in many T.R. collections. Here's one that I have and some text from a WHW booklet.

                        Is this a WHW Tinnie?

Frederic the Great...would this one have been issued by the WHW? I think so, but I am not sure...? Cheers, Torsten.

Yes, they were first issued in 1936 and sold by the RLB & NSKK to help raise money for the WHW.

This is WHW and came in bronze colour and silver colour was a lone issue and is very common in the dark finish but somewhat rare in the silver finish.
