    Deutscher Frauenhilfsdienst Badge A.Stübbe

Hi, I have got this badge at a good price. A Women's helper service emanel neck brooch by A. Stübbe. I think everything is ok, do you see something wrong with it?

    Thank you very much.

If memory serves the jury is still out on those. A more accepteed version is the unmarked example even though the one you show has markings the same as DRK pins if I recall. I have been inactive for awhile so dont take this as gospel please. Perhaps this is why others have not opined. Nothing conclusive I suspect.

The Stübbe ones are fakes. If you look well, yours ought to have an oily shine and the enamel is a little bit irregular. The original ones which exist in 2 types are without makers mark. One type is less carved than the other. The more carved type nearly always has chips in the enamel because of too much tensions.

Would be nice to have the two side by side for visual comparison. Anyone have an unmarked to show? The marked examples are quite often found at as low as $40 over here. Shows and flea markets and such I mean.

Easy to see diferences. Thanks for the image Pete and Reinhardt. Conclusive.

Very interesting. The differences are obvious, but my question is, does it rule out the possibility that both may be original but from different manufacturers? What rules out this possibility?

Thank you very much for your contributions.

Mike Shaner is the expert on these. Maybe he will comment.

Thanks Ron for the compliment, but I don't consider myself an expert on anything--just a guy with some opinions from years of collecting. It is SO difficult to tell one badge from another, but I agree that the Stubbe ones all came up at one time over the years and the dealers that I know all said that they were bad. I had one and immediately got rid of it and found one with no hallmarks that I have had since then...and I feel comfortable with it. I know that collectors (like myself) want all their pieces to be original, but there are folks out there trying to fool all of us!! The problem is that over the years all repro pieces pick up age and stories and that makes it darn near impossible to tell the difference. EVERYONE in this hobby has an opinion, but some are more knowledgeable than others. If this badge didn't cost too much, keep it!! And look for one not marked........

IMO the key lays in the lettering. The first badge shows machine-like uniform lettering while the second badge shows a lettering from which the letters are made by human hands in the original die. The letters are less uniform and more uneven on the real stuff. This is something that also can be seen on other fake versus genuine enamel badges.

                          Ok, very interesting Wim's comment.

Finally I am going to follow Mijke's advice and I am going to keep it. I hope that more things will be known about this badge in the future.

Thank you all for your time.

                              just a thought

Over the years I have seen many damaged ie chiped enamel badges .
From party badges hj pins to eagle orders and red cross.
so you have damaged originals through wear ,war of some poor sod droping it.
Then the fakes that are beat up a bit to age them.
The one thing that stands out to me is this.
On original ones when the glass enamel receives a nasty ding it very often breaks away from the base metal as the glass enamel cannot bend with the metal leaving the base metal clean of enamel.if it flakes it looks the same as the un damaged enamel but a layer flaked off .
On the faked enamel you will see a deep ding but there is always residue left on the base metal and the so called enamel looks duller than the top .This would indicate it is not glass enamel.you do not get flakeing.
                              Just my observation.
                              Regards Pete
