Very nice. Is that faint writing I see on the pinplate at 8 o'clock?

The "Deutschland Ist Erwache" is generally supposed to date from just after the success of Hitler in the 1933 election. It was a companion piece to the earlier "Deutschland Erwache" badges, as in:

Deutschland Erwache = Germany Arise! (or Germany Awake!)
Deutschland Ist Erwache = Germany Has Risen! (or Germany is Awake!)

They were issued as unofficial supporter badges to celebrate the begining of the new Nazi era. There is also a round partypin like version much like the "Deutschland Erwache" badges, of which there are many fakes.

                      Stephen...sources for this?

my understanding was this was the rallying cry to get the nazis into power during the "times of struggle"...ie 20's
the enamel work is far less quality than is seen on the later badges...i would expect that if this was issued after the assumption of power in 33 they quality of the piece would be higher.....

                        Hi Mike,

I'm away from my books at the moment - might be Cone, but I'll check when i get home.

These were not "party" badges - just supporter / souvenier badges quickly and privately made and sold on the street immediately following the Jan 30, 1933 election (so the theory goes). I would expect the quality to be uneven.

The "Germany is Awake" slogan itself indicates that it follows the Nazi victory at the polls (ie - up until then they were telling Germany to wake up, and now it finally is). The Nazis would not consider Germany to be awake until they had finally accepted the Nazis at the polls and put Hitler in power.

Before Hitler came to power the other slogan was used: Wake up Germany!

i disagree with the rational..i may be wrong , but i feel the Germany is awake is a slogan created by the nazis to indicate they were coming to the fore...and that there was another choice in the political process....
just like the Nun ernst Recht pins....or 'Now is right"...same type thing...this was definately around prior to 33
always enjoy going back and forth with you though

I couldn't find this pin in Cone's book, but I really don't question it being an original, and a very rare pin. I'd think it would pre date 1933 easy no RZM or maker markings. The back side reminds me of a small pin I have that pre dates 1933. I've seen in photos and TV programs "Deutschland Erwache" used in different ways pre 1933. Anyone ever seen a pin like this one before ?

it is shown in the Husken catalog on page 237....item number P1 03J
you are correct it is not in the Cone book because she probably didnt know it existed....i also believe this was a pin from the early days of the Nazi movement,
similiar to the plain A. Hitler pins with no markings and the early Nun ist recht pins
