I had the opportunity to pick up a interesting canteen, on the hunch that it may be a HJ or Political canteen from the 1930's or 40's. Now that it is my hands, I'm not 100% sure of its, age and origin. I'm hoping for a little help.
First off, my opinion, as it stands right now.....It appears to be a political or civilian canteen from the WW2 era that has had the cap and connecting chain replaced post-war. Without any additional information, or good outside opinions, I am going to have to stick with that (I always like to have some good, solid info to back up an identification though).
The bit that has me confused on this canteen, is the cap and connecting chain. The cap is made of plastic, and appears to have been on the canteen for quite some time, but is obviously post-war (or so I assume). The connecting chain is of a different type than I normally see on the old HJ and political canteens. I am guessing that if the canteen is indeed, a WW2 era piece, then the cap and chain were replaced at some time post-war.
I have a number of early East German canteens, and when I have this canteen side-by-side with them, I notice too many differences to make me think it is an East German produced canteen, but I can't be certain.
The person who sold me the canteen said that they purchased a large box of tin, pre-war, 1930's era, German toys at an estate sale. When they were sorting through the box, they found this canteen inside, with all the toys. Not much to go on, but it does lead a bit of credence to the pre-war age of the canteen.
I am hoping that someone here can lend me a hand in identifying the canteen, or recognizing the cap and chain, or even a bit of good, educated speculation.
