I dont agree, offcourse it could be a replaced Eagle but to me the helmet is not in that bad condition, if you store a leather helmet with metal insignia for 90 years iam sure you will not see aging on metal but leather gets dry with time... and than it could very well be a late period third reich replacement from first to second pattern NSKK eagle.

If you keep this NSKK eagle metal insignia for 200 years in a nice place i am sure it would look nearly the same.

And how could you be sure its 100% period? was it first or second pattern or replaced under the time ? or post war? this helmets are in no books and civilian crash helmest looked the same and NSKK used two eagels.

There is a good possibility that the eagle is original to the helmet. I’ve owned a few of these. Trust me the leather can age and the bird may not. Your are comparing 2 very different types of materials that stand the age of time very differently.

Look at the prongs in the back of the bird that sticks through the leather helmet. The prongs usually oxidise really nicely where they go through the washers with a nice green build up caused by the 2 different types of metals in the birds prongs and the washers. 90 years of interaction will do that. Johnno.

Honestly, I don't think a replaced eagle is a big deal on these as long as there are no new holes punched.

I agree as long as it is a original eagle is ok i think, we know they replaced them during the time so its nearly impossible to say when its been replaced as long as it
is original helmet and bird they are good IMO.

                    Cheers

If you are happy with that helmet that is the most important thing.

Sorry, but you are wrong. The NSKK helmets are being included in my volume 4 of "Headgear of Hitler's Germany", pages 374 through 403.
