    Red Cross Medal-for review

I would like to get your opinion about the originality of this Medal of the German Red Cross. Details seem to be a bit soft.
It comes with the blue color case. Does this case belong to this medal? Compartment for the ribbon is very narrow, therefore not functional.
Thank you in advance for your comments.

    Klaus,

IMO it is a wonderful Red Cross medal with its original ribbon and I seem to recall Weitze selling this piece a few years ago.

However, I don't believe that the case is contemporary to the medal although its a great looking set so that wouldn't really bother me.

Here is my Red Cross medal in its original box.

And here is my DRL Gold in a red case which is also probably not contemporary but is the one it has been stored in for many years.

        Hello Stan,

Thank you very much for your comment and for the image of the original red case for the medal.

Considering my blue case, it may be just a good luck that the medal perfectly fits the insert. Configuration of the insert rather suggests, it could be designed for the medal with large bar.

Your remark about similar item sold by Weitze is very interesting. I got my piece in 2007 and not from Weitze. Do you remember, when you could see the set on his site: more then 12 years ago or less? If less, then there is another medal in blue case, like mine.

        Best regards,
        Klaus

          Hi Klaus,

It was certainly less than 12 years ago, probably around 6. I remember that it had a grey-coloured insert just like yours but don't recall if the case was blue but it might have been.

            Hello Stan,

That means, there exists another set similar to mine. But, your red box fits better to this decoration and the standard size ribbon.

            Best regards,
            Klaus

              case

              Hi there .
              Award very nice original.
I also would say a contemporary case .
May well have been purpose made at the time but not one of issue.
There were as far as I can see were awarded in the case (box) Stan has showed here .
All red cross cases were funnily enough Red …
There's a surprise .As we well know the 3rd 2nd first were in nice awards cases red with blue lining..
These however could not be put into a packet due to the risk of damage to the enamel. So they went into these little boxes.Be careful of Red cross and social welfare awards in LDO boxes not yet seen enough original evidence to prove these cases are period.
              Regards Pete

                Hello Pete,
Thank you for additional information and advice related to the LDO boxes.
I agree , red color box is the best match for this medal. I also think, my blue case is original. Only one explanation for the narrow ribbon compartment I could find out. Maybe. originally it was planned to use the narrow ribbon, like for the Mother Crosses. Compartment in my box is twice as wide as the Mother Cross ribbon. So, some good length of it could be placed there. Finally, the authorities decided to apply the standard width ribbon and red cases were chosen. As consequence, awarded medals were placed in the red boxes. Blue ones, as already fabricated, were used for some time for private sales, until they were gone. But, all this story is my "philosophic speculation" without any scientific background.
                Best regards,
                Klaus

                  ok

The narrow ribbon for the red cross -social welfare of all 4 types only used narrow ribbon on the minatures …This would look quite odd with a tiny ribbon.
Box as said is not original awarded one..
                  Regards Pete

You are right. My imagination went too far... Blue box is not the original awarded piece. It only serves to protect the medal.

This isn't a one-off. Here's mine - it's the same case (the colour is distorted in the photo). I'm comfortable with it.

It may be the lighting or the photo but the background of the red enamel looks strange.

                              Ian.
