    SA brown shirt with gold buttons

    Hi,

    I need your opinions about this SA brown shirt.
    All opinion welcome!

      Standarte 16 is from Niedersachsen, so the darker-brown is correct.
      Standarte 16 was located at Lüneburg and a part from brigade 60 (Hannover-Ost). The way the braid is sewn onto the arm is not correct. It should be a horizontal stripe and not sewn into a hook.

        The top (neck) and bottom (waistline) buttons were bakelite (plastic) on all original Traditions Brown Shirts. We cannot see the top button in the photos but the bottom button appears to be metal, and this would be a replacement.

          It looks fine to me except the way the Tresse is sewn as noted by Wim. Can you measure the width of the Tresse? It looks like it could be LW/WSS shoulder board or collar Tresse. It appears to have been re-sewn (although it's possible that if it is period applied it might have been removed/readded for laundering the shirt).

          Standarte 16 must have been huge--most of the Niedersachsen shirts I've owned have been from that Standarte.

                      Are gilt buttons seen on SA Brownshirts? Every example I had (years ago) had silver buttons. Did some Standarte use gilt?

                        Early on, button colors corresponded with Gruppes. It was used to differentiate between ones with the same color. Example being Westmark used silver while Niedersachsen used gold.

                        From the start of the war until '42 silver buttons were replaced with aluminum buttons. After '42 all Gruppes used aluminum buttons except for the Stabschef who remained using gold.

                            The only exception to the change (as related to the SA) was the Marine SA, which retained their gold buttons on the blue tunic and brownshirt.
