Thank you Steve. What I was saying about what I see as grinding marks/striations, is that they appear to be diagonally lower left to upper right. But the pin/plate assembly is located over those markings. I don't see how or why someone would try to remove markings in that manner. And if the owner was worried about associating his party number with the pin, what would be better, destroying the pin or doing a half-a**ed job and leaving the number there?

I see your point, but as a retired cop I never underestimate stupid and what bubba could do, we dont know when it was sold, could family have tried to remove it prior to sale? I do know that its a match on the enamel side as well on the link postedComment

These came out to pair with the small "Austrian" fake Fuess badges. The oakleaves are wrong - too much detail, and the pin plate isn't quite right. They were often numbered for semi-famous people and out of the SS DAL.Comment

Are panthographed numbered GPB's considered fakes or were they replacements if one was lost? A good example would be Jakob Grimmingers GPB. Craig Gottlieb had one where the number was stamped and that example was good to most however the one on Andreas Theis had the number panthographed and it sold for a hefty $10,000 leaving collectors at 50/50. Sorry to get off topic however I have never liked them since most GPB's I own have numbers stamped however I come across panthographed examples regularly its almost natural to ask.
