Neat souvenir from the Berghof

Okay strictly speaking this is a 'paper piece', but I figured political collectors and fellow AH silverware/crystalware/etc folks would enjoy seeing it.

It's a letter written by a GI on June 22 1945 (exactly 74 years ago tomorrow) on a sheet of AH's personal letterhead removed from the Berghof.

He writes: "I thought perhaps you might be interested in a sheet of Hitler's personal stationery. It was left behind by the old fellow at his mountain retreat at Berchtesgaden."

Compared to some of the treasures that were removed from the Berghof, many would consider this small-fry - but for me this is a truly iconic piece, and perfectly sums up that particular chapter in history.

You're so right, Chris -- what a wonderful artifact! It perfectly captures a moment in history in time and space, and I can see GI "Jerry" sitting at a sidewalk cafe in Salzburg after coming down the mountain from a tour of Hitler's Obersalzberg Administration, where he happened to find a sheet of AH personal letterhead. His first intention was to share this artifact with those he loved and missed so terribly from back home -- wherever that "home" was: His mother and "Archie," perhaps his younger brother or his step-father...we'll never know for sure. And even as he wrote of his adventure of that day, he couldn't help but wish he was back there with them, enjoying time at the summer camp that he missed as much as he missed his family.

I hope "Jerry" got back home safe and sound in the months that followed, and that "Ma and Archie" held him close and expressed their love for him, too!
