    Coburg Badge for Review

    Dear All,

    I would appreciate your opinions on this Coburg Badge. It would probably be a first pattern but with a potentially replaced pin. Original pins were extremely fragile and were prone to break. Clearly most badges had replaced pins, which until the second pattern came out were then produced in a thicker style.

            Hi Mil. It is indeed a nice original 1st pattern (non hollow back) variant Coburg badge
            in great condition! Regarding the pin, in my experience from studying many Coburg badges, the pin itself is a replacement as both types of the original first pattern were all silver and very thin. The hinge block and the catch are original to the badge and the excess soldering around them is present on many examples I have seen so no worries there.

            The badge shows the die flaws and certain characteristics I like to see indicating it is a original piece and unique to this unknown manufacture.

                      Hi Mil. Thank you for acknowledging my comment. I have a lot of knowledge in these badges however I have never pulled the trigger to buy them mainly because they are not numbered to a individual unlike the BO or GPB which is a shame. If I had the spare funds I would purchase it from you knowing its a nice piece. Don't get me wrong though, this badge is amazing in all aspects being awarded to the original people who participated in the march. I see no problem in this selling.

                        I fully agree with Martin's and Tony's comments and I hope and trust that all is well with you and yours! While I have long recognized that the CB is one of "The Holy Trinity" of foundational NSDAP awards -- the CB, the BO and the GPB -- I have never owned a CB, primarily because of the cost but also because of the rarity of original pieces and the inability to connect a particular person with a particular badge.

                        I'm sure your badge will sell quickly and again, I wish you very well indeed.

                          Thank you both Martin and James. Yes interestingly the Coburg Badges were not marked, just like the Knight’s Cross or other higher end awards (including some Gau pieces). Only the GPB and BOs had attributions. However for such a small number of only 436 first patterns to be produced, and its significance, the value is still unknown outside combat awards.

                          I have had some strong offers and willing to listen to other offers. This particular badge was purchased in 2013 from Germany. Hopefully someone will buy this with confidence. The badge was one of my first pieces.

                            You're so right, Mil! It would be wonderful if we could find the historical lists which itemize the various numbered awards, including the Gau Badges, the HJ Golden Leader’s Sports Badge, the first two numbered SA Sport Badges and the several other numbered badges and awards which provide a now-mysterious number which obviously linked each of them to a master list...lost somewhere in the mists of time! It would be great if a list of named 2nd Issue BO awards could be found, and a complete list of GPB awards from the files of Der Ehrenzeichenskommission in Munich!!

                              So which are the badges or awards that we have access to a named list? For example, The Key (DAL) shows holders of the SS-HR, BO and GPB.
