Is the decal under the glaze? From the photos it doesn't appear to be--I would bet the decal has nothing to do with the 'Alt Heidelberg" stein and is modern with someone's attempt to 'age' the decal to match the worn lettering. Take a look at the decal using at least a 10X loupe/magnifier. If the color edges have a crenelated pattern, the decal is silk-screen printed (which would indicate a reproduction). If the edges between the colors are crenelated, it might be an original decal.

Thank you for the response. No, the decal is not under the glaze. I dont have a loop so I cant examine it the way you have auggested but I can say that is old and has been on the stein for awhile.
