It looks better in your pictures than it did in the original post! Crimps for clips look like those you normally see on aluminum birds but maybe they were used on some zink birds as well. From your picts the lump on the back of the left wing doesnt look like the metal used for the bird; could it just be foreign material that got stuck there (plaster, wax etc.) ?

      Eagle

      The eagle is likely authentic......
I'd try to carefully pick or pry that crap off the back, using something that won't scratch it...like a round toothpick.
A 2nd pattern SA eagle would have both an RZM mark and an M1/?? designation......not just a number. You may try soaking it in warm soapy water. The gunk should come off or soften unless it's solder.
      Let us know.......

          Eagle

There's a good chance the "M1/" code is under that stuff.
Hard to explain why it was put there. Neither eagle nor prongs appear to have needed repair.

            Eagle

            Just my 2 cents.......Eagle may be ok.......BUT........
If an item bothers you, sell the darn thing and let someone else fret about it. These collectibles are supposed to give us pleasure......not a headache.
There are few bargains in life......spend a little more and get one that looks better and you're more sure of the authenticity.
