    NADAP officials brown leather overcoat

    Hi all,

A friend of mine has what we think is a NSDAP officials private purchase brown leather cowhide overcoat. It has 10 party style gold pebbled buttons marked M5/65 no5 which the maker is GEBR WEGERHOFF LUDENSCHEID. It came out of a barn in France years ago. My question is it real and has anyone got anything similar? Any information would be most appreciated.

IMO buttons look to small for the button holes. Therefore I think it is a pimped civilian overcoat.

          Hi Thomas,

I’ll have to respectfully disagree. See the picture below, most overcoats I’ve seen have the same size buttons as the overcoat in question. Does anyone else have any ideas?

          Thanks again,
          Alan

Well, indeed You are right in that. But IMO still not an official overcoat as such is not mentioned in the Organisationsbuch.

Please correct me if I am in error, but weren't all Third Reich leather greatcoats private purchase and not covered by RZM or military regulations? If I am correct, this means that the coat that started this thread is indeed a "pimped" civilian leather coat. It is just a matter of when it was pimped and who the pimp was.

Thats what I think. Still the big button holes don't fit to the small buttons even though in many cases it was worn that way in the time. It still is a civilian overcoat which MIGHT have been worn by a party official in duty. But IMO no way to detect, when the buttons were added.

Not even in uniform-regulations for political leaders the leather coat was included.
No word about it at all!

This is an awkward position to be in: Apparently even if a collector came across the leather greatcoat of a high-ranking PL or a GFM...such as we see in note #5 below of Hitler and von Brauchitsch...there would be no way of categorizing that leather coat since no period regs of the military or the PL include such a possibility! Over the decades I've seen countless photos of military and PL personnel -- including the SS -- wearing leather greatcoats, so there must have been some way of acknowledging that that article of apparel was not being worn in violation of a regulation from somewhere or other!!

On the other hand, we know that Hitler wore a peaked cap that he designed specially for himself as Führer and Reichschancellor which was unlike any other cap created, and I would imagine that Göring never worried about anyone taking him aside and scolding him for wearing that powder-blue Luftwaffe uniform of his own design, which included a peaked cap with gilt oakleaves surrounding the hatband! In both of those examples, the adage "Rank hath it's privileges" would certainly prevail, but in the matter of leather greatcoats and their prevalence, where can we go for further support?!

Does the coat have signs of provisions for should straps or a dagger hanger?
