It's made from pewter and it is very hard to artificially age this type of metal. The engraving is not fresh and shows an overall honest age patina. The underside of the lid is still bright but this is not unusual for pewter items with such age. I believe it to be an authentic period made and engraved bierkrug.

I agree; it looks period to me. Perhaps one of our SS scholars here can tell you where this SS unit was located?
