My guess would be it might be an issue number. Remember, these armbands have nothing to do with SA Sports, but were intended to be worn with civilian clothing by men who had gone through SA Wehrmannschaft training and were aiding or working in an official capacity. Judging by the lack of period photographs showing the armband in wear (there are only a handful at best), the majority of these armbands sat in warehouses or factories waiting for the Americans and British, among others, to liberate them.
