          The quality seems to be lacking when compared to period jeweler-made rings. Also, I wonder what would be the point of having the front panel hinged?

            The point of that would probably to allow the unscrupulous seller of the fantasy piece make up some cock and bull story about it, like it’s a cyanide capsule ring or something of that nature. It’s a flaming pos. Avoid.
