    Party Armband

    Hey all,

Can I get the opinions on this armband? I only have the attached pictures. It looks ok but I don't know for sure.

    Thanks

Personally I'd pass on this one. The red wool looks odd with too much nap. With the creases being pressed into the disc material and the rough edge of the disc, it looks like the insignia was resewn to a different red band.

Hmmm, We should remember that some SA armbands were home made by mothers/girlfriends, etc. Let's see what some others think.

More opinions would be great. The homemade uniform insignia would have been worn early on (1920s to early 30s), but not into the mid to later 30s. After 1933-34 especially, the overall appearance of the SA was supposed to be more homogeneous and professional (so not like street brawlers). For example, members in a public march or ceremony were supposed to wear the same color and type of gloves, standard issue overcoats vs. civilian coats which had been allowed in the early days.
Also, IMO most wives and girlfriends would certainly be able to sew more skillfully than the level demonstrated here. That's why the appearance of the center and how it's sewn to the band, with pulls, creases, and runs to the rayon, gives the impression that it's been taken off another band and attached to this one.

I'd lean to saying this is ok. The odd appearance may be from washing. I have had a few of these and I washed one or two that were in really rough shape. (years ago while a novice collector) The wool here is exhibiting what I experienced from wool that was washed and shrank in weird places. The tape looks ok and the only oddity is the roundel which can be seen on period pieces. I believe one of Hitler's armbands had a woven roundel. To me this is just a washed piece with shrinkage.
