A Night at the Opera- Reichsparteitag 1938

I was looking through the paper material of a large grouping that was received by our local shop when I came across these two items: the program and entry pass for the production of the opera "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg" by Richard Wagner that was performed on the September 5, 1938, the first day of the RPT 1938. What makes the two items extraordinary is that the production was a special one in honor of the attendance by Adolf Hitler. It is all explained in the text. The production started at 5:30pm but usually lasted four and a half hours. Reading the program is a fascinating glimpse into the cultural life in Nazi Germany. You really don't need to understand German text. Just Google the first four names you find after Hitler.

Wilhelm Fürtwangler, the most prestigious conductor in Nazi Germany and the most ideologically tortured. Johannes Maurach was the longtime Nürnberg Opera artistic director who eventually fell out of favor with Gauleiter Streicher. Set and costumes by Benno v. Arent, an ardent Nazi, member of the party and later the SS, designer of the Nazi Diplomatic Corps uniforms as well as some Allach pieces. And finally, the baritone star Rudolf Brockelmann, a WWI veteran whose enjoyed immense success and popularity in Nazi Germany, becoming a party member and a favorite of Hitler, all of which dampened his post war career.

A Night at the Opera- Reichsparteitag 1938 (cont.)

The second piece of I found was the entry pass to the opera theater. The usual information is provided on the front: name of the opera, date and time. There is also a note at the bottom to turn the pass over. On the back are the admonishments for those in attendance. Notice: the pass is only valid when accompanied by a seat ticket, not transferable, must be in your seat by 5:20, and restrictions as to seating of those near the Führer.

Altogether, the two piece provide a very personal visit to the RPT 1938. Unfortunately, the performance was only recognized in the RPT 1938 blue book with a single sentence a the end of the first day report.

Very nice stuff, Joe. I believe Fürtwangler is burried next to Albert Speer in Heidelberg? I visited Speer's grave recently but forgot to pay attention who where his neighbours. The other one is luftwaffe ace Walther Dahl.

        Realy amazing items Joe !!!!!
        Never seen anything like this.
Fürtwangler was and still is one of the greatest Wagner conductors ever.
He was also the favorite conductor of Hitler.

        Thanks for sharing !!!!

It's fortunate that a number of Furtwängler's recordings are available on digital media. While the sound quality is not up to today's standards, they're actually not too bad and it allows his conducting style to be heard.
          Nice pieces, Joe!

Here is Furtwängler conducting the "Meistersinger von Nürnberg" ouverture at a AEG factory organised by KDF in 1942.
Attended by factory workers and soldiers.
Love the faces of the public.

What an exciting interlude here on WAF -- Wilhelm Furtwängler conducting the Berlin Philharmonic at the AEG turbine plant in that city as they provided a public concert performance of the overture to Hitler's favorite Wagnerian opera! Thanks so much, Nibelung1876!

                  Joe,
Absolutely wonderful post, simply amazing view into the culture of the Reich!

Stunning, I could go into detail, but it is literally impossible to overestimate how important these items are, to the the formation of Hitler's ideology, and to the later cultural values of Germany before and after the start of WWII.

I have to add one other thing. You make a great point, Br James. It really is excatly as you put it so nicely- " What an exciting interlude here on WAF! " A public performance of a wonderful piece of music, conducted by the great Furtwängler, a timeless classic written by one of the greatest creative geniuses of Western Culture, Wagner.

Thanks from me also, and I am sure from a lot of others, Nibelung1876!
