    SA Kepi top colour

    Hello!

I am trying to establish if the top of a SA Kepi was ever done in the same colour as the coloured 'district' band around the outside of the Kepi.....or were they always a tan / light brown, as per the brownshirt...

I have quite a number of portrait images of SA men, but as always with a direct face-on image, the top of the Kepi is pointing away to the back....

I've looked online and keep drawing a blank, so I am putting myself in the hands of the experts....

Was the top of the SA Kepi ever done in the same colour as the side band ?

    Many thanks!

No, the top would never have anything other than its regular tan or mottled brown color. I've seen only a reproduction SA Stabschef kepi from Germany that had the upper surface and the band area covered in red fabric --it was not a high quality fake, needless to say.

      Kepi

      Agree -
bTW - Early SA kepis did NOT have a wool, colored band.....they were all brown.
Some of these had the colored band added later.
      But never a colored top..

I also agree with Erich B's and Sgstandard's responses. The earliest SA kepis were produced in one color -- "SA Brown" -- but by the early 1930s the kepis began to show the SA-Gruppe to which that kepi (and it's owner) belonged by the addition of a colored band. Also btw, uniformed Political Leaders also wore kepis in the same brown color as the earliest SA kepis and the PL kepi never changed. The way to differentiate between the SA kepi and the PL kepi is by the chinstrap on each: an SA kepi will include a dark brown chinstrap of smooth leather, whereas a PL kepi will include a chinstrap of woven material.

...many thanks for taking the time out of your day to answer....and for the confirmation of what I felt was the correct answer, I just wanted to read the opinion of others more knowledgeable than myself...
