    photo bucket turned off

For those that can no longer use photo bucket for hosting photos I found a new free site, I have no association with this site I just don't like the fact that I have to pay for something that has been free forever

    Hi,

imo, the WAF hosting should be privilegied. Too many topics with dead pictures...

Another interesting similar and earlier topic :

    See You

I agree - it is a real tight arse trick. I have never used these free image loading sites in my life. If I see a thread and it has these on I generally don't bother looking any further...

What should be privileged? Posting pictures on this forum or using third party sites? Third party hosting allowed members much more leeway in creativity and size in posting. The posting methods on this site are cumbersome and limited.

I don't understand. If you see a thread with a free hosting site image, you don't bother reading further? How can you tell it is a third party site? Or do you mean that if you start a thread and it has the broken link image of the image site, you don' look further. I understand, but do you bother reading the info or do you only look at pictures?

          What about their service caveat?

"What cannot be uploaded to Postimage.org servers:
          • Copyrighted images if you don't own the copyright and are not licensed to do so
          • Violence, racial intolerance, or advocate against any individual, group, or organization
          • Any images that might be illegal in the USA or EU

If you are not sure whether the image you want to upload is allowed then do not upload that image. Uploaded images are checked by staff and images that violate terms will be removed without prior warning. This may also get you banned from our website."

What I mean by not pursuing the thread further when it uses third party image hosting is I cannot be bothered clicking or following links to pics posted elsewhere, with the ads/pop-ups that often accompany them, much as I cannot be bothered to click on links to ebay items because people are too lazy to post the pics in the actual thread.

Why bother to try and help someone if they cannot be bothered to A. Pay the fees? or B. post the pics in the link?

I think you should be required to join in order to list pictures, and maybe the membership would go down?

There are thise who pay to keep the site up and running and those who use it for free. It is just like taxes: some pay and other live off those who pay.

You obviously don't understand the service that Photobucket discontinued. They allowed third party hosting of photos posted to their site. When I composed a short piece about German police gas guns on the firearms forum, I was able to seamlessly integrate three photos from the photobucket site into my narrative explanation of the police gas guns. There were no links to click or adds bothering you. You just saw the photos. You wouldnt know if those photos had been uploaded to WAF or where. They want one to pay $400 a year for that service now.

But some people use links that had to be followed to see the images. Photobuckt also allowed linking and will do so for $100 a year. And I agree, that was a cumbersome and lazy method. None of my posts ever used links nor band width on this forum, so actually it saved the forum owner, whomever that may be , some money. I never (or hardly ever) used any of the bandwidth for images in my posts. So that is why I usually refrained from paying membership, as I didn't use the service. I joined specifically to sell some items.

And in most instances, I was helping members and sharing my collection, rather than asking questions.

I agree that you should have a membership to post. $35 a year is not much with how much this forum has to offer.

As I wrote above Bob, using third party hosting saved this site money by not using band width to store images posted. So in essence, by using Photobucket I was sharing my knowledge and subsidizing this forum.

And how much does a lifetime member pay every year ?

There are many many, probably a majority, of fine interest specific forums out there with no where near the revenue stream of this one who allow posting of pics without requiring a paid membership.
What drives paid membership here is access to selling, not posting pics get real.

I concur and furthermore since I'm not actively collecting anymore and am an infrequent poster here I also refuse to pay the annual fee. This is one of the few forums that I'm aware of, and I belong to many, the requires membership in order to post pictures. I understand and agree with this requirement to sell items here. IMO: If the real goal of this forum is gaining knowledge and understanding picture posting should be free for everyone.

Well stated, am pretty much in the same boat.
Requiring a paid membership to post pics is really punitive, spiteful and probably counter productive - As people who want to sell are going to pay for a membership regardless of pics [in fact, many do nothing but sell], and people who have no intention of selling but want to share info and post pics are reduced to hosting sites, begging someone to post for them or finding another forum.
