Hello,
I do have a question regarding these items. Most of the time these are said to be candle holders but I have a few of these cups and I don't see how one could keep a lit candle in them wihout the cup itself burning. If anything I could see them being used as some sort of decorative item but as a candle holder I wonder. Would like to hear any other opinions about these items. Are there any catalogs from the time period showing these cups?

I agree--I've always wondered about the fact that a small celluloid cup is not really suitable to hold a candle. I don't have one but would it hold water, or is it too flimsy? I thought, if they were watertight and sturdy enough, perhaps they were the equivalent of an early NS 'Dixie Cup', to hold water or another beverage at propaganda events. They would have been banned after the laws protecting national symbols were enacted, which might explain why a relatively large amount of them have survived unused.Originally posted by Duzig View Post

Well, I have a few of these cups and they certainly can not hold any water. The underside is made of cardboard. I tested it with a tealight inside and outside with some wind and it worked fine. As far as I no they were used along side the road with parades. Some people also say they were used as grave lights.Last edited by timster; 07-04-2017, 02:27 AM.Comment

dozen of "complete sets" are sold each year...
I'm very very suspicious on those currently for sale since a few years...
They originate from Germany or the East for sure.
Anyone is having period pictures of them in use for funerals or other events ?
And what about an UV test on the cardboard ?
If the product existed during WWII, are all the ones sold today originals or repros ?

Thanks to everyone for their answers. timster, you are the first one I've heard that says they actually put a tea light inside and it didn't burn the cup but I still have my doubts about these items. It would be nice to find a picture of one in a catalog from the period. They do make nice little decorations put among other items but I still doubts about their use and origin.

I agree that there are many for sale in Europe, which should cause suspicion. I am still on the fence about them, since materials could also be period.
Cardboard bottom in UV negative.
Indeed a "tea candle" should and can be used in them.
The material is gelatine, when made wet they crimple/shrivel.Comment

Update hands on
They came in the mail today. Now i've seen them hands on this are my observations.
Subjective;
it smells old
Objective;
Very fragile material
The swastika is in detail badly coloured in. You see the black colour go past the lines (see pictures). Every cup has the damage/bad details on other places, so not similar.
Where the red material is attached to each other it has not bin glued, it seems it is melted in to the structure. (See picture)
