    E-Stand Nuremberg Desk Eagle Opinion

Can I get an opinion on this? It was sold to me by a long time reputable member.

My concerns are the pitting and lack of details. However, this the smooth back version which I am not really familiar with. Just want to make sure to avoid potential conflicts before seller ships.

    Much gratitude in advance.

Its been worked on a little I think... Not a perfect bird but at the price that was listed its fine and you wont get hurt on it. It was tempting.

$850.00 was certainly a great price for this fine bird! Congrats to whoever captured it!

This design does remind me of a question I've posted previously over the years: since this piece was designed to be free-standing, as opposed to being mounted onto a surface where only the obverse is visible, why was the bird's reverse not finished as the obverse was? I've seen a number of birds with apparently unfinished reverses in a number of different designs...?? Anyone have any ideas?

        Thanks,

        Br. James

I didn't like it. It lacks detail. The rear of the eagle looks lumpy. No detail on the wreath whatsoever...also lumpy looking. Notice the talons...very poor. That's my 2 cents worth.

Thanks mrec27777 and J.Wraith for your thoughts. From research, I know "HB" eagles come both marked and unmarked and definitely, this birdy is definitely not perfect.

Berghof - I echo your thoughts/concerns as well. With anything bought on the secondary market, one can never obtain 100% assurance of it being pre 1945. Therefore, the only solace is to get a number of "expert" opinions and use one own judgement and what limited knowledge one may have. I can only "limit" my risk by thinking that the effort to make and quantity of the repro "HB" eagle is not out there as the repo desk eagle that can be bought for $50 on multiple internet sites.

Br. James - I live in Washington DC and at the souvenir shop, they sell sculptures of Presidents Lincoln/Washington and models of the White House in all different price range. The cheap ones look like a mess while others you would be proud to display on the mantle. My guess is that in Germany they had a similar approach to meet all types of buyers. The "HB" would probably be a lower end birdy.

              Again, much appreciate the analysis.

Thanks, RommelPlatz. I agree that there were many shops throughout Germany that sold pieces like this, and yes, I realize that in NYC (where I lived for 45 years) you can spend as much as you want on a variety of sizes of statues of the Statue of Liberty or the Twin Towers, and you get what you pay for! Here in Baltimore it's Blue Crab statues, and they come in a wide variety of sizes and prices. And the matter of quality of the sculpture is just as you say!

                Cheers, my friend,

                Br. James
