    Brass Wax Stamp Seal, Opinions

    Hello everyone,

    Opinions on this brass stamp? Appears to be a type that would seal or stamp inside wax. Does it look authentic or Polish garbage? Obviously canceled

    IMO, a WW2 period original stamp,
    based on eagle details and letter font.
    Opinion comes from several like originals
    in my nearly four decade collection. Have
    you ever seen engraved fakes of these?

      Looks original to me too. Just a notary seal, but same production qualities as mine. Perhaps it had a handle and broken off? Here is mine.

          Wouldn't the brass notary stamp be used in a press to emboss the design onto a document rather than be used with wax? That's likely why there is no handle.

            Erich, but then a male die counterpart would be needed to impress into paper, don't you think. At least that's how the old fashioned notary and corporate seals worked that I remember. And those stamps, at least the ones from the 50s and 60s that I never threw away, were cut into a thinner base that was mounted into a mini-handpress. The lack of a handle on this one could just be that it broke off.

            I guess it all depends on the thickness of the first brass one shown. There is no side view so we can't tell the thickness.

              Joe, that's right. But the small, desk type embossers have an upper removable plate (female) and a permanently affixed/glued/molded male plate on the lower part. This piece might be the removable upper plate. On the other hand, I am not sure whether the embossed notary seal was used throughout Germany in the 30s/40s. I know I've had period notarized documents in groupings but I never paid attention to how the notary seal was applied.

                I would say it is half an inch thick or so. Definitely not thin like a notary embossing seal

                  HI HAYDEN,
                  Your seal its typical wax seal, commonly used those days, have similar one (although my is missing wooden handle as well, did have it in the past just got misplaced unfortunately, on the handle there was a small metal circular sign with writing"Stempelfabrik AG, Kassel", at the base of the handle was a metal ring)
