SA Buttons which one?

Hi guys,

Can anyone tell me which kind of buttons were on a SA Jacket? Were they gold or silver? I see different ones. Really want to buy one, but seems difficult.

You see both gold and silver on the jackets because each were used. The gold or silver would be for whichever corresponding Gruppe. This was needed because colors were used my multiple Gruppes. An example of this would be Gruppe Kurpfalz and Nordsee. Both Gruppes utilized the color steel green. So to differentiate the two, Kurpfalz uses silver buttons and Nordsee gold.

As the war took its toll on all materials, insignias were simplified and almost all Gruppes used silver buttons.

SA regulations are extremely complicated, but not as much as Political Leaders.
The regulations were continually evolving even though the Reich only lasted 12 years.
The use of both silver and gold buttons (and devices......pips, etc.) continued until 1941.
Collar piping is another issue......until 1938/1939, SA units wore bi-color piping around the collar for enlisted and jr. officers....silver or gold for higher officers.
At this same time frame, the SA enlisted wore brown collar piping with silver enhancements or flecks. This was short-lived....and eventually, enlisted SA wore no collar piping at all. The collar tabs evolved in both materials and construction, and with all regulations there was some crossover. Please post any uniforms you may be interested in, and we'll make sure you're going in the right direction.

Hobie and Sydney have provided excellent information. In addition, smooth buttons were worn by the SA on the cotton twill brownshirt jackets, while RZM type pebbled buttons were worn on the wool tunics.
