Stahlhelm badge with SS on the reverse?

Gents, I have this Stahlhelm 1930 badge with a screw back device. On the back are RZM in a circle and SSin a circle and some numbers. It seems unusual to me to see SS on such an items. Can anyone assist on this? Thanks Rich

              Hi Rich,

I fully agree with all the comments received. I've collected Stahlhelm Bund Commemorative Badges for decades and this piece is nothing I've ever seen before! One of MANY clues here is that the RZM licensing system was in it's infancy in 1930. The Stahlhelm Bund remained an independent veterans' organization -- and a huge one at that -- until Hitler came to power and eventually absorbed the Bund and all other veterans' organizations into the SA in July of 1933.

Sorry, my friend, and I hope you didn't pay a lot for this fake. But take heart: we've all had similar situations in our past, and some have cost us dearly!

              Cheers,

              Br. James

The year 1930 has nothing to do with the manufacturing of the badge. This type of badge was instituted November 13, 1933 and was a decoration of distinction for longtime membership, in fact a
honor badge. The first badges were manufactured in early 1934 and granted May 5 by Seldte.

The RZM had nothing to do with the Stahlhelm-organization (Mitteilungsblatt der RZM from March 2, 1935: die RZM ist nicht zuständig). This organization has their own source: "Der Stahlhof"
and at the reverse of the badge should have been STH. Further all of the badges of this distinction were black enameled.

Yes, that is the indication for "Der Stahlhof", often wrongly explained as
                      Steinhauer & Lück.

                            Der Stahlhelm 1930

I just recently purchased a nice screw back Der Stahlhelm badge in Silver with black enamel on Ebay as a reproduction, but it looks too good to be a repro. It has the exact same screw back with the SS runes. Looks great on my cap. I wish I could share a picture. Cheers, Bob

You are not seeing "the SS runes" on the reverse of this piece. "Sth" is the abbreviation for "Der Stahlhof," which was the headquarters building of the Stahlhelm Bund, located in Magdeburg. Der Stahlhof functioned in a similar fashion to Der Braune Haus of the NSDAP in Munich.

                              Cheers and Fröhliche Weihnachten,
