    Armband Care Help Please

    My Fellow Collectors,
Well I just returned from an estate auction bearing 2 well-soiled and wrinkled armbands. The party armband is of wool and the Youth seems to be of cotton. My question would be can they be cleaned and can they be ironed and how to do this would help. How about a dry cleaner?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. PS The prices were right off the charts. Shoulder boards, daggers, veteran's armbands. Hard to believe. WWI items wre hard to get bids on. Swats fever??? Guess so. Thanks alot.. Robert

Well if the armbands dont have a paper tag, a little warm water and a very small amount of woolite cant hurt to get some of the soil off.
I would just leave them as is, mabye place them under a few books to get out the wrinkles.

    Thanks,
    Michael

P.S. Do you have any photos?

Michael, Thanks for your help. I don't know what kind of scan I could get with an armband. You don't think a trip to the dry cleaners would do?? Robert

Robert, try what MGN proposed. Years ago I put my party pennent is the sink with warm water and soap and it cleaned it up pretty good. Used a blow dryer to help dry. Any other suggestions out there.

A trip to the cleaners is not recomended with this kinda stuff, you will not get it back. I have herd stories and stories on how stuff gets lost or damaged. Try to clean them yourself. There are many collectors like myself that will not and refuse to touch up, clean, or repair any items from an armband to a tunic. It depends on what you want for yourself.

OK, Think of it this way, you can always clean it but never have it the way it came out of the 'woodwork'

Yes, if you can some scans would help to see the amount of soiling.

Thank you Michael and Frank. The stains actually don't bother me as much as the wrinkles and folds especially the Youth one. Please take a look at these scans and tell me what you would do if they were yours. Thank you very much. Robert

Now here is the wool one. More stains but less wrinkles. Thanks again for the help. Robert

Hi Robert, we have had lots of discussions about "to clean or not to clean" over the years. It is very much each to his own on this subject. From my own point of view I might clean one object but not another.

If you do decided to clean these items, hand wash them in the sink with some soap powder like "woolite" that Mike suggested. Make sure the water is lukewarm. Do not rub them just give them a good soak and very gently agitate the water. Bear in mind the NSDAP armband already has some splits on the white roundal; there is a risk these could get worse. It is not unknown for the red dye to run a little too. With regards to drying I would lay them out in a room and let them dry naturally.

Do not send them to be dry cleaned and do not entrust anyone else to clean them for you unless they are experienced in doing this with sucess in the past.

                Hope this helps you?

                Cheers, Ade.

Ade, Thank you. Would it be safe to somehow just use an iron on the Youth one?? As you can see it is very wrinkled. I amy l;eave the wool one alone but I would like to somehow get out the folds and wrinkles on the Youth armband. Thanks alot. Robert

Sometimes you can get away with spraying them with water until damp, then laying out flat to dry. This doesn't clean them , but you avoid soap, possible runs, and possible glow. You also need to be VERY careful if you try to iron them as you can do major damage very quickly if done wrong.

                      Hello Robert

I had a HJ armband in the condition very much like yours and did not clean it. I did however measure the armband fully extended and then cut a piece of stiff cardboard to fit within the armband. I then placed the armband in a large hardcover book for a couple of weeks. Its not perfect, but it is not nearly as wrinkled and displays great. I try not to clean anything and as already stated in this thread never send my stuff to the dry cleaners.

                      Best Regards

                      Mike

Mike, That is a good idea. I think I will try that before resorting to an iron. Am not sure how to remove the folds around the edges though. Thanks again. Robert
