Hi guys, so i managed to finally get some detailed photos which include a number and eagle stamped into the side, thoughts now? i had posted it on war relics forum as well and they didnt like it, but that was before these pictures were added

Original metal stamp. Typical eagle and numbered acceptance proof marks for these metal stamps.

Now, one more picture. The handle, should have a protrunding rounded metal pip to show the right side up.

Is it there? If not, the handle could be a replacement.

Metal stamp is still good in my opinion.

This may be good but regulations for the postal system were that the briefstempel was to be round. You can have additional stamps for special occasions, which you often see in conjunction with the round briefstempel. Then again, this is SS and they often did their own thing.

I'm not an expert on SS Briefstempel, but compared to other Briefstempel I've seen and/or had, the quality is somewhat mixed. The oak leaves of the wreath are not well engraved and there is a spot left unfinished, for example. All of the brass stamps I've had have been done in intaglio for using with sealing wax. What would be the point of making a stamp intended for use on paper of brass? A rubber stamping face will hold more ink, is less likely to slide and smear on paper, and is less expensive.
The Briefstempel I've owned have been round except for one with a round portion within a rectangular cartouche. However, I don't have any research material about these or why the SS would 'buck the system' with a differently designed stamp.
