This is a small political grouping I just bought. Through a relative in FL, he told me he had a friend who was the nephew of an uncle who just died and he was a vet.

I contacted the nephew who was 68, and he told me his uncle had been in the 101st and had picked up some "Nazi stuff." As can be seen there are four HJ Zimmerman membership badges, plus an HJ armband with a RZM HJ tag. The guy had good taste because to my surprise there was a Deschler M1/52 RZM Party Badge in the lot.

The bullion eagle was included. Neither the vet nor his nephew are collectors. In fact the nephew told me the guy was a very serious watch and clock collector and had ton's of high, very high end watches as part of the estate.

Why the vet would have gone out to buy the eagle to add to his "TR collection", does not make too much sense. Considering the left facing eagle had to be for a Party formation, how this could be a fake "WH pz cap eagle," is tough to accept.

Every item other than the eagle is obviously standard Party stuff and unquestionably original. The eagle I cannot identify.

                      Opinions?

                        Hi Gary,

Not an expert so take it for what its worth

                        1) Left facing eagles are not exclusive to NSDAP, Heere, KM and Luft all wore left facing eagles
on breast and cap insignia. For party eagles M27, M34 M37 & M39 are left facing but M36 faces right as well as most government type birds (Customs, Reichbahn, Forstbeamt Reichpost)

                        2) I dont know enough to comment on the authenticity of this particular specimen and it could be party related but to me it looks more to be a KM beamte eagle or a panzer eagle depending on wether the background is dark blue or black.

                        3) Insofar as how could this bird be a repro if the rest is OK I have had a few personal encounters in the 70,s (when you could still pick up stuff from local vets around here) where the poor old geezers had been conned into a "mutually beneficial trade" by an unscrupulous collector/dealer and traded perfectly good and rare pieces for crap because the vets didnt know the difference or beleived the copies looked better/fancier in their collection than their own bring backs. I dont know how common this practice was elsewhere but as is to be expected (and more often naught in all honesty) the descendants would be willing to swear on a pile of bibles that their stuff was what their father uncle or whatever brought back so each piece in a lot should be assessed on its own merit irrespective of the source...

                        Regards

                        JC

I’ll second what Jean Claude just said...Not at all uncommon for vets to “embellish” their own bring-backs with items sourced incidentally at flea markets, or even the back of an old Biker magazine, Unique Imports catalog, etc, etc. The extended family would certainly be none the wiser, especially given the passage of so much time. For example, I once had a nice grouping I sourced directly from a Med theater / ETO vet, complete w/ capture paper listing some of the items. Interestingly, the lot also included a small sized Kriegsflagge, (vintage 1970’s!!)...He didn’t remark on where he got it, except “somewhere along the way” as he probably thought it’d be a nice addition to his small group of souvenirs...Just a case in point.
