It is hard to tell at times if the green is steel green or emerald due to fading over time..silver button denotes Sachsen or Oestereich..it appears original

Looks 100% original to me and I'm tending toward Kurpfalz for the group as the green looks a bit dark to be that of Sachsen. The Austrian steel green was changed by the time this kepi was made (1937 pattern).

            Kepi

I agree with Erich that the kepi is more likely from Gruppe Kurpfalz, than from Sachsen. The green doesn't seem bright enough to be "emerald", and Kurpfalz "steel green" is a more common color encountered.

Excellent...thank you all....being more common, what approx. value would it be..?
Appreciate all your input...great expertise....where would a person find out about the different timeframes and info on construction etc....more for educating myself....

                Kepi

ALL kepis are fairly rare. The price difference between kepis of those two colors would be minimal, with the "emerald' green being worth a little more. I'd check various dealer websites to get an idea, but privately would sell for less, of course - around $700 and upward. I got mine for $700 from a WAF forum member in Germany a year or two ago.

Many thanks...Erich noted a date range...how do you tell the vintage of these...is there a reference somewhere..?

                    Kepi

Look to see if there's an RZM tag under the sweatband. I'm guessing "no". The material used in the crown is similar to the material in mine, which is an early piece. Some kind of stiffener was painted on the material to make it waterproof - kind of like homemade oilcloth. I've never seen a sweat diamond made of that material, but everything else on your cap looks legit, so I wouldn't worry about that. Mine also has a fake leather sweatband. Kepis made before 1932 didn't have a colored wool top band, so you see them sometimes with colored wool bands that were added later. Yours looks like it was made originally with the colored top. Look to see if there are holes from where a small eagle used to be. If not, the kepi was probably made later, after 1936(I believe), when the larger eagle was introduced.

The best book is volume 3 of "Headgear of Hitler's Germany" by Wim Saris with Otto Spronk and Jill Smith. The first half of the book covered Political headgear; the second half is SA.

The later pattern is constructed differently than the earlier and middle period kepis. This is definitely a 1937 pattern although, as noted by sgstandard, the crown lining is unusual. If you post some closeups of the inside top, it may be clearer to tell whether the kepi was made this way or modified during the period.
