That was my first thought as well but then I thought it to be not practical to have to get the wooden sticks out by lifting them up - but indeed that is exactly what it is.

It was neither a specific NS ritual nor german one - it is just not as common anymore as it was still roughly up to the eighties I would say.

O.k, I think this is the case here in some cases as well. A modern business card here is about 3 1/2 inches, Third Reich card is smaller but do not think its a full inch shorter, tooth picks it is I guess and about right looking at a tape measure.
